Orthodontics Braces

Orthodontics Braces

Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that corrects teeth and jaws that are positioned
improperly. An orthodontist is a specialist who has undergone special training in a dental school or college after they have graduated in dentistry.

Crooked and irregular teeth can jeopardize not only your smile and facial beauty, but can also affect your overall confidence.

Variations in alignment , shape, size of teeth or jaws can have delirious effect on the way one looks. Additionally, such malaligned teeth can cause:

Speech problems
Difficulty in maintaining oral hygiene
Gum problems
Jaw growth hampering
Unnatural teeth wear
In severe cases, jaw joint and muscle pain

Crooked teeth and teeth that do not fit together correctly are harder to keep clean, are at risk of being lost early due to tooth decay and periodontal disease, and cause extra stress on the chewing muscles that can lead to headaches, TMJ syndrome and neck, shoulder and back pain. Teeth that
are crooked or not in the right place can also detract from one’s appearance.

The benefits of orthodontic treatment include a healthier mouth, a more pleasing appearance, and teeth that are more likely to last a lifetime. With the advent of technology, orthodontics treatment can be carried out at any age. Various
modes of treatment are

Metal Braces
These are the metal brackets and wires that most people picture when they hear the word “braces.” However, modern brackets are smaller and less noticeable than the notorious “metal- mouth” braces that many adults remember.

Pros

Least expensive type

Cons

 Most noticeable type of braces

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces are the same size and shape as metal braces, except that they have tooth-colored or clear brackets that blend in to teeth. Some even use tooth-colored wires to be even less noticeable.

Pros

Less noticeable than metal braces

Cons

More expensive than metal braces

Brackets can stain easily if patients don’t care for them well

Self ligating Braces (DAMON)

Similar to traditional metal and ceramic braces, self-ligating braces make use of the bracket and wire system. This type of braces uses brackets with clips or doors that hold on to the wire, instead of the rubber band tie system. These braces are supposed to hold on to less food and be less painful than other types of braces, and they are also supposed to reduce the number of trips to the orthodontist the patient has to make. This type of braces can be found in both metal and ceramic versions

Pros

Self-ligating braces can be used to effectively treat simple or complex problems

They can also achieve precise results by giving your clinician complete control over the way

your teeth move.

They can help convert extraction cases to non extraction ones

Cons

Clear self-ligating braces are not completely hidden

You will need to brush carefully around brackets and wires in order to keep your teeth clean

Lingual Braces (Invisible Braces)

Lingual braces are the same as traditional metal braces, except that the brackets and wires are placed on the inside of teeth. They can be just as effective as traditionally placed braces, whether of metal or ceramic, but they cannot be seen from outside of the mouth. While they can be spotted when the wearer opens their mouth, they are far less intrusive and likely to be noticed than brackets and wires on the front of the teeth.

Pros

Invisible from outside

Cons

More expensive; not appropriate for severe cases

Clear Aligners/ Invisalign

Invisalign is a popular removable brace that uses clear aligners to straighten teeth. Without a trace of metal it gently moves teeth using a series of transparent plastic aligners. The aligners are removable and are replaced every 2 weeks. Your Invisalign aligners will be custom-made just for you, and each one will move your teeth little-by-little. Because there are no metal wires or brackets, Invisalign is very discreet. Best of all, you can take your brace out to enjoy all the foods that would be difficult to eat with a fixed brace on. You will achieve a great smile with little interference in your daily life Just make sure you wear your brace for a minimum of 22 hours daily.

Pros

Almost invisible

Removable

Patients can eat and drink whatever they want

Cons

Invisalign will only be effective if you are wearing your aligners for the recommended amount of time.

There are some more complex problems that will be better suited to fixed braces
